Celebrating Glasgow’s 850th Birthday – Through Cake!

The competition has now closed.

2025 sees Glasgow marking its incredible 850th birthday - and at the Ideal Home Show Scotland, sponsored by EcoFlow, we honoured this milestone in the sweetest way imaginable: with an extraordinary cake display that’s capturing hearts and imaginations.

The “Celebrating 850 Years of Glasgow” Cake Competition attracted bakers from across Scotland, each brought their creativity and love for the city into their showstopping creations. The result? A mouth-watering display of cake artistry that’s as joyful, diverse, and bold as Glasgow itself.

This celebration of baking wasn't just about skill and flair; it was about home. Seasoned pastry chefs and anyone who learned by licking the spoon while helping their gran, every baker started somewhere.

Our incredible panel of judges - celebrity chef Jimmy Lee, Glasgow’s Lord Provost, broadcaster Gina McKie, and chef Jak O’Donnell - had the unenviable task of selecting the winners from an exceptional line-up.

Visitors to the show marvelled at the clever designs, all crafted with passion. From playful nods to the equestrian statue of the Duke of Wellington, frequently adorned with traffic cones, to other bakers' illustrative interpretations of Glasgow flourishing, these cakes were more than just desserts - they were exquisite and edible tributes.

A huge thank you to the enthusiastic and skilled bakers who took part. In the end, the judges decided to present 4 winning cakes! See below.
