Create a welcome in the hallway with sisal

This snug hallway teams chunky sisal flooring with wooden storage and accessories. Throws and upholstery in natural materials add another layer of warmth.

Sisal has a natural rustic appeal and brings a laid-back informal feel to interiors. It is hardwearing and robust so is ideal for hallways. It can stain, though, so consider it well if you have a houseful of children or clumsy housemates!

Anchor a living room scheme with a rug

Use a rug to add warmth to hard flooring and to define a seating area. Position centrally to mark the main gathering place in the room. Place a coffee table on top and  sofas, armchairs and footstools around for cosy lounging.

Choose a design that complements your room scheme. This design adds a neutral, warming element and features a turquoise border in keeping with the botanical theme.

Fake a timber effect in the kitchen

Wood works wonders in a kitchen, but the stunning plank-effect floor in this modern kitchen isn’t even the real thing.

If you don’t have floorboards in good condition and your budget won’t stretch to engineered wood, consider a faux product.

Today’s fake wood designs are remarkably convincing. It is now possible to buy wood lookalikes made in the form of vinyl, porcelain tiles and laminate.

Layer natural flooring in a living room

Top natural flooring or carpet with a rug and bring extra comfort and warmth to a living room fireside. The rich texture and softness of this looped boucle design marks the gathering point around the fire, while protecting the floor covering beneath.

Vacuum regularly and turn and reposition to keep the pile from flattening, particularly under furniture.

Define a kitchen style with tiles

The retro feel of this happy, colourful kitchen is anchored in the choice of ceramic floor tiles. The buzzy aqua colour and bold, large-scale pattern are reminiscent of classic post-war designs.

As an alternative to wall-to-wall tiling, define a zone in an open-plan kitchen, such as a dining area or island unit. It’s a great way of adding a focal point to a large area.

Use patterned carpet to transform a bedroom

Pattern is returning to carpets once more – and in fabulously modern designs. This refreshingly contemporary bedroom combines acid yellow and gradations of monochrome to produce an exciting and inventive space.

Carpet is the ideal bedroom flooring, whether fitted or in rug form. It adds luxury and comfort while reducing noise, heat loss and draughts.

Use practical vinyl for a child’s room

Add warmth to a little one’s room with vinyl. These sunny yellow tiles bring a fun accent shade into a monochrome scheme.

Vinyl comes in a huge range of colours, patterns and formats. It can be used in any room and is durable, slip-resistant and super-easy to clean. Good quality vinyl is also cushioned and warm.

Vinyl is available in everything from budget options to luxury ranges. Shop around for eco-friendly options made from sustainable products.
