As interior designers, style commentators, Hollywood celeb’ red carpet reporters (they’ve interviewed hundreds of stars including Madonna, George Clooney, Ryan Gosling, Ryan Reynolds, Helen Mirren and Will Smith) and all round lifestyle gurus, Colin & Justin's goal is simple: to share good things with good people. So, if hot interiors, cutting edge products and stylish destinations are your thing – read on...
Colin, who hails from Glasgow, studied Local Government at the College of Commerce, while Justin read psychology at Glasgow Uni. They both enjoyed further education but realised they needed to change direction to feel satisfied. Justin worked, for a time, in real estate while Colin toiled in local council. Each enjoyed a short dalliance as film extras and spent weekends taking on modeling jobs via a local talent agency. Hey, anything to pay the rent, huh? It would be these frothier career diversions, however, that eventually provided fresh and eminently more appealing opportunity...
The boys always shared a huge affection for home design and, whenever opportunity presented itself, helped friends knock their homes into shape. Sure, money was short but inspiration was wildly abundant. As their experience grew, word spread and professional opportunities beckoned...
They got their first break on Scottish TV show ‘Summer Discovery’ some 15 years past. Later, they screen tested for a new BBC show called Trading Up, which they went on to host for seven series – some 250 episodes in total! The premise was simple; spend £500 over a weekend and make difficult to sell homes more appealing. At the same time they were cast as resident interior designers on Housecall, another BBC daytime show.
Shortly after this, they were invited to front what would ultimately become a BBC monolith; ‘The Million Pound Property Experiment’ which saw them buy, renovate and sell seven properties across Britain, ranging from £100,000 to £1.25 million. Together with The BBC, they gifted the profits of each ‘flip’ (nearly £300K in total) to Children In Need, a major UK charity.
Other shows on Five included ‘How Not To Decorate’, 'Twenty Ways To Make Money On Your Home', ‘Wedding Belles’, 'Makeover Madness' and 'Fashion Frock Ups'. Their most recent Five outing was 'The Estate’, a groundbreaking format where they were dispatched into a local housing scheme to help rebuild its once high levels of community pride.
The last few years have seen Colin and Justin take North America by storm, with Canadian shows like ‘Colin and Justin’s Home Heist’ (HGTV) and ‘Colin and Justin’s Cabin Pressure (Cottage Life) both of which syndicate in forty countries around the globe. They were resident judges on W Network’s ‘Game of Homes’ where they presided over four couples restoring run down houses. Each episode, C&J appraised the contestant’s efforts, ultimately awarding the winning couple the house they’d just decorated.
Back on British TV, seven years past, on 'I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here' they went on to host 24 episodes of ‘The Sixty Minute Makeover’, also for ITV. The premise? Three rooms transformed in precisely one hour. Sounds crazy, perhaps, but it’s all in the careful pre planning!
2016 saw them stretch their designer tendrils into Australia as resident judges on TV property show ‘Reno Rumble’, as guest judges on ‘The Block’, Australia’s biggest decorating show and as guest hosts of ‘The Living Room’, Australia’s wildly popular lifestyle show.
Over and above the foregoing, Colin and Justin are resident design experts on ‘Cityline’, Canada’s BIGGEST morning show, have featured on ‘Entertainment Tonight Canada’ and write a syndicated weekly newspaper column in The Toronto Sun, The Ottawa Sun, Vancouver 24 Hours, Toronto 24 Hours and The London Free Press. They also contribute to The Huffington Post where they cover a wide range of lifestyle related topics including design, restaurants and travel.
Their product line, ‘Colin+Justin Home’, consists of chairs, tables, mirrors, artwork, bed linen and lighting and can be found in stores like Homesense, Winners and Marshalls in Canada, Home Goods in America and in Trade Secrets, Australia. Aye, it’s fair to say Colin and Justin have been busy, but they’re excited to be back on home territories planning a new show for UK broadcast. And of course they’re looking forward to seeing friends old and new during their upcoming appearances at The Ideal Home Show Scotland!
