Art is not a luxury, but a necessity for the human spirit.  Herbert Read

Derek Goodchild: Roots in the Sea

My name is Derek Goodchild, of Goodchild Art. I paint seascapes and coastal landscapes, primarily from the Hebrides and the West Coast of Scotland, in acrylic on various types of canvas.

I’ve always felt at home near the ocean. Boats, beaches, waves, sea life, each brings drama and beauty, constantly reshaped by light and weather. But behind the scenes, painting this ever-changing marine world is anything but easy. It demands patience, calculated decisions, and hours of wrestling with paint, composition, and light. That’s where the real story is.

The Real Work Behind the Shoreline

The Outer Hebrides are not easy to reach, but stunning beaches and the energy of the sea and drama of the scenery rewards this odyssey. The raw, untamed drama of this remote island chain continues to be my deepest source of inspiration. Getting there often means braving long drives, ferries, delays, unpredictable weather, and remote conditions but the payoff is immense. The wind roars across open shoreline, waves slam the beach with a deep thump and hiss, and Atlantic storms roll in without warning. There is a contrast that never dulls: dark, jagged mountains against bright, rolling surf; wide skies pierced by sudden shafts of light.

Breakthrough: More Than a Nice Picture

A finished painting isn’t just a pretty image. It’s the record of effort, the effort of mixing colour into vibrant hues, the hesitation before that risky stroke across a blank canvas, the excitement that comes when the work finally breathes. Whether it is original paintings or Giclee prints, I know my patrons own something which I’m proud of. These are moments of breakthrough: the art - and the artist - say, “I stuck it out and it’s alive.”

Final Thought

As you browse www.goodchild.art, I hope you see more than colour and form. I hope you sense that behind each piece is a story of effort: of stepping into the studio tired, scared the composition won’t work, obsessed with light, yet determined to wrest something compelling into existence. Because whether it’s a storm‑lit Hebrides wave or a quiet dune scene, every painting carries proof: I showed up. I worked. And the art became real.

These paintings are full of colour, energy, and joy - each one created to be uplifting and engaging.
